Because of this recent surge in popularity, many think of Barre classes as the newest fad in the fitness industry. However, in all actuality, Barre classes have been helping both women and men tone, lift and tighten their bodies for decades. This method of exercise is far from new. In fact, Barre started over 50 years ago in 1959 by, Lotte Berk. Lotte Berk opened Lotte Berk Method on Manchester Street in London. After suffering from back injury, Berk had the idea of combining her Ballet Barre training with rehab therapy and thus the Berk Method was born. In 1971 this method of exercise was introduced in the United States by, Lydia Bach, a student of Lotte Berk's. She introduced this training in New York City. Barre is a workout routine that combines elements of Ballet, Pilates and Yoga into an efficient and effective workout. By using your own bodyweight as resistance, while challenging your core stability and balance, Barre classes manage to give you the streamlined body of a dancer all while reinforcing your strength and muscle tone. Barre workouts are not only very effective but they are also fun, upbeat classes that are choreographed to amazing music. Many become hooked on Barre workouts their first class out.
