A major part of successful living lies in the ability to put first things first. Indeed, the reason most major goals are not achieved is that we spend our time doing second things first." – Anonymous January is that time of year when a lot of us begin to think about our goals. Several years ago my bookclub posed the question: "What are your personal goals for this year?" I couldn't think of even one. I felt pretty satisfied with my life, so I answered "I just want things to remain the same – status quo." Of course, as I've gotten older I've realized that things never remain the same, for better or worse. Change is the only thing that's constant, when you think about it. Many years ago, finally fed up with my weight, (previously I just called myself "well-rounded"), I decided to get in gear and attack the situation head-on. First I got myself to a doctor – turns out I hadn't been in 6 years because I was... well... busy. He signed me up for a whole mess of tests, none of which I really wanted to do. I got real with myself and did the tests anyway. Turned out my thyroid was low and, with medication, suddenly I felt the kind of energy I hadn't had since I was a teenager. In addition to that boost, I put on some sneakers and got to walking more, again... whether I liked it or not. At the same time, I began to really analyze what I was eating. I've always preferred cookies and cake to fruits and vegetables, but enough already. As a good friend of mine once said, "Sure, losing weight is hard, but so is being overweight. So which 'hard' do you choose?" I can tell you that while my goal was simply to stop gaining weight, the end result was that I lost a significant amount. I'll never "graduate" with a good-health degree – it's something I have to work at constantly and the struggle is real, y'all. I'm sure you all look great, but also please make sure your health is great. Your loved ones want you to live a long, happy life. Back to the subject of goals; our goal here at the Newsletter is to increase the quality of the look of the Newsletter, while remaining the same informative and friendly publication that you've loved for years. We're always looking for ways to enhance the quality of our product. Trust me, the friendly people at our printer's and our post-offices are pretty much sick of us pestering them. We'll continue to do so, because we believe in this little publication. Please feel free to email us with any concerns or suggestions you may have. Another thing that needs to change at CTNL are our silly little mistakes. We're not quite sure how we make mistakes when we read each issue over, and over, and over again, but we do. I suppose we're human. I can assure you we always do our darndest not to let it happen. Finally, this year marks our 36th year in publication – it's hard to believe. We've lived through the so-called "death of print" and survived feeling stronger and more resiliant (but sadly, some of our favorite National publications didn't). We thank our advertisers for keeping us in business! Please shop at their stores and utilize their services! Perhaps our next goal should be another 36 years? I think we'll focus on today and tomorrow, and let the rest take care of itself. As always, thank you so much for reading us! We wish you a Very Happy and Healthy New Year! Ruth Keesing has published a revised edition of her booklet "What Do I Do Now?" – a practical guide for surviving the tasks associated with the death of a loved one. It addresses Probating a Will, Social Security, Military Benefits, Funeral Information and other relevant subjects. And, most importantly, What To Do While Everybody is Still Alive.
