Fungus/damaged toenails can be one of the most difficult things to treat. It causes your toenails to become thick yellow crumbling and even grow into your skin. There have been so many treatments available: prescription, nonprescription, topical, laser and even homeopathic and over-the-counter remedies. There has never been one treatment that is better than the other. Sometimes it takes multiple treatments over multiple months, or even years, to get a clearing of your nails. There have been new genetic molecular fungal cultures that can identify the genus and species of the fungus or growth in your toenails. We can also identify whether there has been some microtrauma to the nail. Because most prescription topical medications are not covered by many prescription plans, they end up costing hundreds of dollars a month with little or no success. Additionally, there are many over-the-counter topical medications available in pharmacies that aren't successful because they are not able to penetrate into the thickened fungal nail. A new topical antifungal/nail treatment has become available at our office. This new patent-pending treatment is called Tolcylen and is the first over-the-counter topical that is designed to penetrate through the nail plate so that the medication can be successful in clearing the nail. It is made to be applied like a nail polish twice a day for both the tops and under the edge of the nail. This treatment can be used independently or can be used in combination with other oral medications depending upon the severity of your toenail and the type of fungus/damage you have. Tolcylen solution has a combination of antifungal medications and natural moisturizers to soften the nail as well as treat it.
