Elaine Whiting, AFAA Certified Personal Trainer & Group Exercise Instructor, AEA Certified (Aquatic Exercise Association), specializes in Dance and Common Movement Disorders We all know dancing provides physical, social and psychological benefits, but a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine shows that dancing increases cognitive acuity at all ages. (% = reduced risk of dementia) 0% = Bicycling, Swimming or playing Golf 35% = Reading 47% = Doing crossword puzzles at least 4 days per week 76% = Dancing frequently Dancing offers the greatest risk reduction of the activities studied, both physical and cognitive. Why? Dancing involves split-second rapid-fire decision making that creates new neural paths in the brain. Body movement and the thinking involved integrates several brain functions at once, including kinesthetic, musical, rational and emotional components further increasing neural connectivity. This 21-year study of seniors (75 and older) monitored the rates of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease, in almost 500 aging subjects. The study was funded by the National Institute on Aging and led by the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in NYC. Dancing also: - Reduces stress and depression - Increases energy and serotonin - Strengthens bones and improves cardiovascular health - Improves balance, flexibility, and strength - Studies show that dancing may also help those with Parkinson's disease Bring this article in with you to one of our Wellness Center locations and enjoy a free one day guest pass, on us! John Basilone (November 4, 1916 – February 19, 1945) grew up in the small town of Raritan. Basilone, a US Marine Gunnery Sergeant, received the Nation's highest military award for valor–the Medal of Honor–for heroism during the Battle of Guadalcanal. He was the only Marine enlisted man to receive both the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross in WW II. Basilone was also the only man to return to action after winning the Medal of Honor and then be killed in action. On September 21, 1943, the town of Raritan gave John Basilone a "Welcome Home" Parade to honor him for winning the Congressional Medal of Honor. The Parade was covered by Life Magazine (who ran a four-page story) and the Fox Movietone News (who made a Newsreel that was shown in movie theaters throughout the country). The John Basilone Parade has been running ever since. • Celebrating over 75 years in Scouting, Troop 121 is a high-adventure Boy Scout troop committed to the ideals and values of Scouting. The oldest Boy Scout Troop in the Clinton area, it is sponsored by and meets at the Clinton Presbyterian Church on Monday nights.
