Newman, director and producer of ShowKids Invitational Theatre (SKIT) since the company's inception in 1986, is a 2015 inductee into the New Jersey Association of Community Theater's (NJACT) Perry Award Hall of Fame. At NJACT's Black and White Gala at the DoubleTree Hotel in Somerset, the High Bridge resident recently celebrated an award-winning career worthy of "Hall of Fame" induction. After numerous nominations over the past 28 seasons for "Outstanding Production of a Musical", Carolyn won the 2014 prestigious Perry Award in this category for Shrek. In 2004, she won the Perry Award for her direction of Bye, Bye Birdie. Other awards for SKIT's beloved skipper have included: McDowell Club's 2005 "Woman of the Year", the Town of High Bridge's 2004 "Ambassador of the Year", 2001 Perry Award for SKIT as the "Outstanding Community Theatre" of 2001, 1998 "Hunterdon County Chamber of Commerce Golden Award" and MasterCard & Entrepreneur Magazine's 1992 "Leadership in Entrepreneurial Achievement Award". Carolyn's work has also brought her recognition as one of the "Notable Women through the History of HC" by the HC Cultural & Heritage Commission. NJ's premiere awards for community theater, the NJACT Perry Awards, are given for outstanding achievements in NJ Community Theater. Considering that more than 200 shows from around the State are reviewed each year, the number of SKIT nominations year after year is staggering. Carolyn has produced 70 shows with over 1000 SKIT members during her career, and is a 24-time Perry Award nominee as a director and two-time winner (Best Director and Best Musical). And her company? SKIT has received 170 Perry Award nominations. SKIT, Founded in 1986, is a non-profit, family community theatre group which offers the children of HC an opportunity to experience the joys of theatre and give the community professional quality children's theatre productions. ShowKids Invitational Theatre programs are made possible in part by the NJ State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts, through the funds administered by the HC Cultural & Heritage Commission. www.showkids.org. a l l e V i a t i n g C h r o n i C P a i n w i t h e m d r ( e y e m o V e m e n t d e s e n s i t i z at i o n a n d r e P r o s e s s i n g ) By Lyn Siegel MSW, MPH, LCSW Chronic physical pain and/or emotional distress can create problems and are often a response to physical or emotional challenges. Physical and/ or emotional pain that expands beyond the expected time for the normal process of healing can sometimes occur creating emotional difficulties. When there's a failure in our brain's information processing system that causes pain to be prolonged beyond a normal healing time, the pain can become frozen in the brain and ultimately chronic. Most people with chronic pain feel more and more helpless and defeated as time passes while trying to live with chronic pain. They often report feeling drained. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) can help dissipate pain by unfreezing the painful sensations and emotions embodied in traumatic memories. The sufferer can usually get significant improvement after completing a series of treatments which can vary in number. Specialized equipment that uses sound, touch or light to stimulate the brain bilaterally is used to reprocess the disturbing/traumatic thoughts, feelings and body sensations that cause the pain. I use the 8 Phase treatment model developed by Francine Shapiro: 1. History, 2. Assessment of the Problem, 3. Preparation, 4. Desensitization (using bilateral stimulation) 5. Installation (of a positive mind state) 6. Body Scan (the client is asked to search the client search for any remaining pain or other difficulties) 7. Closure, 8. Re-Evaluation. I also have the client imagine future imagery of pain-free states. EMDR can be used for many other physical and emotional difficulties. Lyn Siegel MSW, LCSW, MPH has extensive training and experience with EMDR.
