Unfortunately, many websites developed for desktop computers do not adjust well for viewing on these mobile devices. In light of an April 21 change to Google's search algorithm referred to by some as Google's "Mobilegeddon," companies that don't have mobile-friendly websites will be significantly impacted. Many business owners, especially small business owners, may be unaware of this change or confused by its impact. All mobile Google searches will favor sites that are "mobile-friendly" thus impacting over half of the internet searches. Google has an online tool that will test a url and determine if the page has a mobile-friendly design: https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly. If your website is not mobile-friendly, there are two options – a responsive desktop website or a standalone, mobile website. Responsive desktop websites automatically adjust their content and display so that information and images are easily viewable on a mobile device. When a search is conducted on a mobile device and the search result is clicked, the visitor sees the same information as is visible on the desktop website – the information is just formatted differently. This automatic reformatting is a 'response' to the device being used to access it. In contrast, mobile websites feature pertinent information about the company without going into too much detail, with information accessible through an icon-driven navigation system. In this instance, when a mobile device or tablet is used for an internet search and the search result is clicked, the visitor is automatically redirected to the mobile website. An advantage of having a responsive desktop website is there is only one website to maintain; however, conversion to a responsive format may be costly, depending on the size and features of the site itself. A mobile website, on the other hand, requires two separate websites be maintained. This type of site is, however, less expensive to create and can generally be brought up quickly. With this option, a business may continue to use its current desktop website and pass Google's mobile-friendly test. As one small business owner to another, this is one Google algorithm change that needs your attention. Don't get left behind because your website is not mobile-friendly.
