Graduation is just around the corner and college seniors who haven't already done so are scrambling to land their first post-college job. I remember how intimidating my first job interviews were. You want to make a good impression and gain an advantage over your competition. Be careful though; some questions are illegal. The key is knowing how to handle those questions if they arise. Accusing your interviewer of violating anti-discrimination laws and refusing to answer probably won't go far in getting you the job. Some topics interviewers cannot address include: • Criminal Activities: General questions about arrest records are prohibited during the initial interview. However, after the initial interview employers can ask about convictions relating directly to the job. For example, if you are applying for a job in the financial industry, they can ask if you have ever been convicted of embezzlement. • Citizenship, Nationality or Ethnicity: Employers cannot ask if you are a U.S. citizen or inquire about your nationality or ethnic background, yet they do need to make sure you are eligible to work in the U.S. Inquiries into your foreign language skills are appropriate if related to the job. • Family Status: Marital status and parenting plan questions are illegal, but employers can ask if you are available for whatever schedule the job requires, including overtime and travel. • Medical History: Unless your condition requires special considerations, accommodations or poses a safety hazard, your medical history is private and should not be discussed in an interview. • Memberships and Affiliations: Questions regarding religious, social or political affiliations are illegal, although interviewers may ask if you have any affiliations with industry-related trade or professional groups. • Social Media Passwords: Many states, including New Jersey, have laws prohibiting employers from asking for social media login credentials. They can look you up on social media, though, so you might want to think twice about what you post. Don't be caught off guard if your interviewer throws you a curve ball by asking a seemingly odd question. Often these are designed to evaluate your creative problem-solving skills. Be prepared; understand your rights. Good luck in the job hunt! – Victor Rotolo Victor A.
