As a trained member of CERT, you'll supply critical support to our community's first responders(EMTs, firefighters and police) during emergencies and large public events: hurricanes, large fires, Clinton Christmas parade, Haunted Mill, Lebanon July 4th parade, etc. We ask for a one-to-two-hour a month commitment – but remember: your training benefits you 24/7 and can help in home emergencies if a loved one is ever in need. If your teen is still undecided and needs some extra attention, please reach out and make an appointment with Next Step. It's not too late to make sure your son/daughter has possibilities when making decisions about their next steps after high school. While most students I advise are heading off to a four-year school, I also advise students while they are attending RVCC, students who need to take off after their first semester at college, and students that have decided to transfer. Common missteps I have seen over the years: • Not starting the process early enough. I recommend students visit at least one school (with a tour and info session) at some point before Thanksgiving of sophomore year. • Not taking a full length ACT diagnostic around the same time the PSAT is taken junior year (and not doing any prep before the PSAT). • Hiring a financial planner thinking they can 'find' you money and give good advice on what colleges your son or daughter should apply to. The best way to keep money in your pocket is to make sure your son or daughter finds their best-fit-school, and doesn't take more than the 'normal' eight semesters to graduate. Side-note: less than 50% of students who intend to graduate after eight semesters actually do! • Believing there is a TON of scholarship money out there. Private scholarships and employer grants account for only about 7% of student aid. Colleges themselves are the most reliable source of funding. Almost everyone receives merit aid based on their unweighted GPA from their academic classes. • Sending in applications the day they are due! This can put you at a disadvantage at some schools. Most of my clients are done with their applications BEFORE senior year begins. • Not establishing a relationship with the college admissions advisor from the school you are applying to. • Thinking your son or daughter will not be ready to leave home. (There is a lot of growth going on senior year, and they will most likely surprise you!). • Visiting a school and NOT going on an official tour or attending an information session. • And, last but not least, NOT hiring a college advising specialist. Consults are available for 9th, 10th, and 11th graders. Best time to officially hop on board with our services is between 10th grade and November of Junior year, but it is not uncommon for freshmen to reserve a spot with us after a consult!
