The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick of Hunterdon County (FSSP) has named Mr. Stephen Carroll as 2024 FSSP Parade Grand Marshal and Mr. Brian Manning as 2024 Irishman of the Year. Both gentlemen received their sashes of office at a meeting of the Friendly Sons in late December 2023. FSSP President Mr. Russ Crosby saluted Steve and Brian who have been friends, brothers, and stalwarts of the Friendly Sons for over a decade. The Friendly Sons are delighted to be celebrating the Tenth anniversary of the Parade in 2024. We hope the entire community will enjoy our Irish Festival Weekend and help support the mission of the Friendly Sons by purchasing tickets to the events and for our 50/50 drawing." Now is the time individuals start thinking about getting back outside to participate in outdoor activities. The temperature will still be on the chillier side so you want to make sure you are prepared with the essential items. Clothing options during the start of Spring for outdoor activities are very important. It is best to dress in layers so you are prepared if the temperature is colder or warmer than expected. You can easily remove layers if the temperature starts to warm up. Make sure if you are walking, running or hiking that you have the appropriate footwear on, closed toed sneakers or hiking boots are great options. Staying hydrated is crucial during any type of weather and physical activity. Make sure you have water with you. If the exercise you plan on doing is more strenuous, replacing electrolytes is very important so drinks that help replenish them are a great choice. Make sure everyone with you has enough water and other drinks that are needed including your pup/s if you bring them along! Be aware of roads and hiking trail conditions. As the winter is leaving, there can still be debris leftover from the change of the seasons on roads, hiking trails, etc. Be aware of your surroundings and stay focused. If you are exercising alone, and listening to music, make sure you don't have it too loud so that you can hear noises around you. ALWAYS, have a cell phone in your backpack, pouch or wherever you store your items in case of an emergency where you would need to call for help. If you are Diabetic, it is essential to have something with you to eat in case your blood sugar drops. Some individuals experience Exercise-induced Hypoglycemia during exercise, which is a drop in blood sugar during or after exercise. If this is the case, having a snack with you is extremely important. Lastly, as we enter the Spring season the days/nights still get darker earlier than the summer. Having a flashlight and wearing reflective clothing is essential. This will allow you to see your surroundings but will also allow others to see you especially on roadways. Spring brings new life, the beauty of nature and the excitement of being outdoors again! Enjoy all of the season has to offer when exercising outdoors, safely!
