Mark Zdepski will deliver a presentation with a blend of history, geology, and information on the industrial processing of quarrying along the Delaware in the Stockton/Raven Rock region. The quarrying of Triassic-aged brown sandstones along the Delaware River began in the colonial period, but during and after the construction of the canals in the 1830s, the industry boomed. The construction of the Belvidere and Delaware line of the Pennsylvania Railroad contributed to the further growth of the quarry industry, particularly in Stockton/Prallsville (NJ) and the surrounding area of Raven Rock, Lumberville, and Centre Bridge (PA). The Stockton area quarries provided foundation stone for the State House and for the Pennsylvania Railroad viaduct in New Brunswick. Zdepski will also share historical photographs depicting the actual conditions of the quarrymen working sites and mining techniques. Mr. Zdepski's grandfather worked in the Raven Rock quarry until it closed. Many of the sites are now public open space and Zdepski will let you know which of these are accessible. W o M e N ' S F o r u M Sharing Wisdom Dear Ladies, In my previous letter I told you that we'd be dedicating the month of March to the writer Daphne du Maurier. Since then I have been immersed in all things Daphne, right down to her musical preferences. She is another captivating subject for us to encounter - a woman of talent, intelligence, complexities, endurance, and a level of self-confidence that is awe inspiring! Our journey to meet Daphne starts with a luncheon on Thursday March 14, at which we'll offer a screening of a documentary about her fascinating life. I've pre-viewed several docs in a quest to find just the right one for us. Before it starts I'll tell you why this one was selected, and afterwards ~ we'll talk about it! DAPHNE DU MAURIER LUNCHEON Thursday, March 14 at noon. Admission is $20. To register see below. On Thursday, March 21 we'll be having a book discussion of Daphne's most famous novel, REBECCA. I have been reading this book when I can sit down to and audio reading it when I can't. The writing is wonderful, she steals you away from the first unforgettable line: "Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again..." There are audio books available on YouTube and Cloud Library, each with excellent narrators. If you are familiar with the British actor Anna Massey, she reads one of the books on YouTube, fabulously. Or, should you choose to read the good old fashioned way, with your own voice in your head, Dillon Library is providing us with books free of charge! To register, see below. To wrap up the month of Daphne du Maurier, at our Thursday March 28 luncheon, we'll be screening the Alfred Hitchcock movie version of REBECCA. True to his reputation as a brilliant filmmaker, Hitchcock pays homage to Daphne's story with a fantastic cast, extraordinary sets and scenery, and a script that ranges from sentimental to mysterious to wildly campy. (Mrs. Danvers!!! Oh how Judith Anderson must have loved playing that role. Delicious! BTW it brought her a nomination for an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actress.)
