Sampler Classes Scheduled At Doric House Museum In earlier times young ladies took lessons in fancy needlework as preparation for a genteel lifestyle. Now local girls can share the experience in a four-session class held on Saturdays from 9:30 to 11:30am at the 1845 Doric House in Flemington. Sessions are scheduled for Jan. 12, 19, 26 and Feb. 2 in the high-style parlor of the museum. The class, which serves girl scouts for their sewing badge, is open to 4th, 5th and 6th grade students, but is limited to eight in number. No prior training in stitchery is required. Tuition is $25/student–includes all supplies. Mail checks to the Hunterdon County Historical Society, 114 Main Street, Flemington NJ 08822. Here's an excerpt from their website describing this program: Public Archaeology: Every summer, volunteers are given the opportunity to see what it is like to be an archaeologist and excavate an actual site, through our Public Archaeology Program. You can help us dig and screen for artifacts in the field, or wash, label and count objects at the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Lab: http://www.jefpat. org/mac_lab.html. If you don't want to get dirty, you can just watch the work in progress. You can come as often as you want – an hour, a day, the entire season! It's a fun way for the whole family to learn about the past. Who knows what great discoveries await you? In our very own Township, we have one of the most historically significant Colonial and Revolutionary War sites in the entire State of New Jersey, the Vought House. Preliminary archaeological excavations indicate the possibility of the existence of buried colonial era outbuildings associated with our Vought House. The Clinton Township Historic Preservation Commission, in conjunction with the 1759 Vought House Inc., would like to gauge the Community's interest in participating in a Vought House "Public Archaeology" program, should we be successful in establishing one. We welcome your expressions of interest. Please email: Frank White, c/o Clinton Township Historic Preservation Commission, at email address: bmullay@ embarqmail.com. Periodic updates will be provided in our Historic Preservation Commission Newsletter articles as we make progress in this exciting area of community involvement in local historic preservation. Thank You. n The Woman's Club of Clinton The Woman's Club of Clinton will meet on Monday, January 7, 1:00 pm, at the Clinton Presbyterian Church, Center Street in Clinton. After a brief business meeting, guest speaker Carole Nelson will present a program, "New Jersey's Role in the Underground Railroad and the Legend of the Quilt." Members and guests will hear about nineteenth century New Jersey's part in the Underground Railroad and the reputed role that quilts, secret codes and hiding places had in helping escaping slaves. The Woman's Club, organized in 1922, celebrated its 90th Anniversary of Service to the Community. Meetings are held on the first Monday of each month and all are welcome!
