H e a l t h y C o n s u m e r s B e wa r e Each New Year brings with it the feeling of beginning anew – a fresh start – and we often start the year by making resolutions. For a good number of us, our resolutions include a component tied to health – to eat healthier and to exercise more. Healthier Eating: Understanding the difference between two common terms in regards to foods may help you make better food choices. Low-fat products contain 3 grams of fat or less per serving, and 30% or less of total calories. Reduced-fat products contain at least 25% less fat than the original version – whatever the original fat grams were per serving.* Although you may feel like you're eating healthier by choosing the reduced-fat version of a food, the item may not be a low-fat item or a calorie-reduced item. Read the nutrition labels carefully to make sure a reduction in fat does not mean an increase in other equally unhealthy ingredients such as sugar or sodium. Exercise: You may or may not choose to join a gym to kick start your New Year's exercise program. If you do join a gym, there are a number of factors to consider prior to signing a contract. In addition to the basics of hours, location, class offerings, equipment type and availability, take time to understand the contract details thoroughly before signing. Find out such things such as whether or not you can freeze your membership and, if so, under what circumstances. Additionally, find out the overall time commitment and what you have to do to cancel your membership. Review any cancelation fees for early termination of the contract. If you are uncomfortable with any contract stipulation, negotiate with the facility prior to signing the contract. In all cases, an educated consumer is a wise consumer. Best wishes for a year of renewed health and peace. Victor A. Rotolo, a resident of Clinton Township, was named by New Jersey Super Lawyers as one of the top attorneys in NJ for 2012. A final set of grants will be reviewed in March 2013. "We are excited to approve grants at each of the Clinton Township Schools, and to have these pieces of educational advancements and opportunities available to our students and teachers," said Cindy Miceli, chairperson, Clinton Township Foundation for Educational Excellence. "We also would like to thank all of the Clinton Township teachers and staff who submitted grant requests, and for their dedication to enriching the educational experiences of our children." Totaling more than $15,000, the seven grants, focusing on scholastic enrichment, staff professional development, technology, arts and education, and cultural enrichment , will be implemented at Spruce Run School, Patrick McGaheran School, Round Valley School and the Clinton Township Middle School. The grants are: At Spruce Run School: Doceri Funding: A new state-of-the-art system of teaching and learning known as "Doceri" will be piloted at Spruce Run School. With the grant funding, multiple copies of a new, highly acclaimed iPad app and desktop software will be purchased for use in grade 1, kindergarten, preschool and special area classrooms. The new technology will create a highly interactive learning environment for students and teachers. A t P a t r i ck M c G a h e r a n S c h o o l : Lenape Native American Lifeways: Educators from Winakung at Waterloo, a re-created Lenape Village in New Jersey, will introduce the Lenape Native American lifestyle and culture to all Grade 3 students. During visits to each classroom, students will participate in several interactive, "hands on" projects using recreations of authentic tools that the Lenape Native American people used to survive. PMG Publishing Center: Students will be able to see their own writing projects come to life with this new grant. For some of their best-written pieces, students will have the opportunity to make an appointment at the new "PMG Publishing Center" and have their story typed and bound into a "real" book. All students will create at least one book during the 2012-2013 school year. Digital Keyboard: A new digital keyboard will be purchased. In addition to weekly instruction, annual concerts, assemblies and all-school morning meetings, the portable nature of the keyboard allows for other uses, such as hallway sing-a-longs. At Round Valley School: Trail Art: To enhance the "fitness trail" (currently being constructed around the perimeter of RVS), all students will create ceramic relief sculpture tiles, which will be manipulated into various forms to create 3D sculptures. These sculptures, in addition to birdhouses painted by students, will be displayed along the new fitness trail. Quiz Bowl Buzzer System: An exciting, interactive buzzer system will be purchased to assist in enhancing critical thinking, problemsolving skills and academic teamwork for students in face-to-face, competitive environments. The system is comprised of eight hand buzzers (four per team) and a lighting system that indicates the first contestant to "buzz in." In addition to in-classroom use, the system can be used for outside competitions, such as Knowledge Masters. At Clinton Township Middle School: Quiz Bowl Buzzer System: This system (described above) also will be purchased for the Clinton Township Middle School. "Character Counts!": A new character education initiative, focused on the Character Counts program, will be implemented. The Character Counts program involves the six pillars of character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. The initiative includes motivational items as well as teaching tools/resources.
