B e p r e p a r e d f O r e y e a l l e r g i e s By Mason Munn, OD Eye allergies — red, itchy, watery eyes can go along with the symptoms of sneezing and a runny nose that occur with seasonal allergy sufferers. Normally harmless substances that cause problems for individuals who are predisposed to allergic reactions are called allergens. The most common airborne allergens that cause eye allergies are pollen, mold, dust and pet dander. To get relief from your eye allergies and itchy, watery eyes, you can take a few approaches: Avoiding allergens. The best approach to controlling your eye allergy symptoms is to limit your exposure to common allergens. Close windows in the Spring or when the grass is being mowed to avoid exposure. Wash out eyes with an over the counter eyewash or use lubricating drops after working outside. Wash hands, face, bed linens and towels frequently. Removing your contacts. Contact lens can attract and accumulate airborne allergens. Consider wearing only eyeglasses during allergy season or, consider switching to daily contact lenses that you discard after a single use, to avoid the buildup of allergens. Over-the counter eye drops. There are a few brands of non-prescription eye drops available that relieve itchiness, redness and watery eyes caused by allergies. Use as directed or dryness may develop. Avoid eye drops that state they will remove redness. Prescription medications. If your allergy symptoms are severe or over-the- counter eye drops are not working, you may need your eye doctor to prescribe a stronger medication. Cold Compresses. This is one of the easiest things to make the eyes feel better.
