Millions of Americans suffer each year with chronic swelling in their legs and feet. There are many causes for chronic swelling. Some of them are venous insufficiency, poor circulation and heart problems. But many times people are suffering with Lymphedema and not these other problems. Lymphedema is an inflammation of the lymph glands in their legs and feet. Many times it is missed or misdiagnosed. Many physicians will prescribe water pills to decrease the swelling in your feet and legs. This does help but does require for you to use the bathroom many times and especially at night. Other treatments include compression stockings which can be uncomfortable and very difficult to use in the summer months. There is a new treatment for Chronic Lymphedema in the legs and feet. This is a compression Lymphedema pump. It involves applying two large vinyl sleeves over your legs and then connecting to a compression pump which gets inflated segmentally over an hour. This treatment is nonpainful and only needs to be used once or twice a day. Patients can get immediate relief without medication or compression stockings. This treatment is usually covered 100% by Medicare and most insurances. It requires you to see your podiatrist and have him or her examine your legs and feet and have measurements taken. Once this is done then a representative from the company can call you and make arrangements to come to your home for you to be fitted for use of the compression pump. Patients responded extremely well to this treatment. If you have any foot problems, issues and questions, please contact Howard J. Tzorfas, D.P.M. at 908.236.6999, or visit: www.DrTzorfas.com.
