No matter what your background or interests, Meals on Wheels in Hunterdon has a volunteer opportunity that's just right for you. Most people want to become Volunteer Drivers delivering meals to their homebound neighbors throughout the county. Site Volunteers help part-time staff package meals and assist drivers as they prepare for their routes. Meals on Wheels is a private, not-for-profit service agency. As such, it is governed by a voluntary Board of Directors. Board members attend meetings and serve on committees to address staff, fundraising and budgetary issues. Volunteer opportunities abound, technical, social, financial, even 'life experience' contributions are needed. Your involvement – from a single project to an ongoing commitment – can really make a difference! Join thousands of Americans in an upcoming safe disposal event by cleaning out your medicine cabinets. In a continual effort to help residents protect their families and community, Safe Communities Coalition of Hunterdon County, in partnership with Law Enforcement, and the Prosecutor's and Sheriff's Offices, are urging residents to take part in National DEA Take-Back Day, held on Saturday, April 27 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. This initiative addresses a vital public safety and health issue in our community. Prescription and over-the-counter medicines in the home are highly susceptible to misuse. Homes that store medicines in easily accessible locations are at even higher risk. County teens revealed misusing medicines for recreational purposes; the majority of those drugs came from a friend or family member's medicine cabinet (Narcotics Focus Group). "The risk is greater than we can afford and if we all do our part to get these medicines safely disposed or secured in the home, we can reduce addiction", said Rocky Schwartz, Rx Chair of Safe Communities Coalition in Hunterdon, referencing data released by Drugfree.org, which illuminated that 90% of adults with Substance Use Disorder started using in their teen years. With addiction at epidemic levels, recent statistics revealed an alarming rate of teen overdoses, which have more than doubled from 1999 to 2015 and continue to rise (CDC, 2017). "These numbers reflect only a percentage of the opioid-related overdoses and deaths sweeping the nation, and our communities have not been spared by this growing crisis," said Amy Menes, Project Director of the Regional Coalition. " O u r C o u n t i e s h a v e u n f o r t u n a t e l y witnessed a number of fatal overdoses this year, much of which stemmed from medicine misuse leading to heroin. These are our friends, neighbors, and children. We need to take every opportunity and precaution to ensure their safety, starting with regularly cleaning out our medicine cabinets", said Lesley Gabel, Regional Coalition Director. Please note that liquids and syringes are not accepted at these locations. Please remove any identifying information from medicine containers. Visit our Facebook for participating locations at tinyurl.com/DEATBD-April2019. Can't make it on the event date? Drop off your medicines at one of your local permanent Medicine Drop Box Locations. Find one near you, visit www.safecoalition.org. The goal of Safe Communities Coalition is to foster a safe and healthy community by eliminating drug use, underage drinking, and medicine misuse. Prevention Resources supports the health and wellness of the communities we serve. For more information, visit www.SafeCoalition. org, call: 908.782.3909, or visit: www.
