Participants will receive information about state and federal laws along with information about what the national landscape looks like for LGBT young people. Youth and families will learn how to contact and effectively interact with lawmakers and have their voices heard in a variety of arenas. Families will leave this workshop feeling confident in advocating for their child's legal rights, and youth will be empowered to use their voices to create an inclusive, affirming, and safer communities for themselves and their peers. The Key Speaker will be Ashley Chiappano from Garden State Equality. Ms. Chiappano, the Safe Schools Coordinator for NJ, is a parent, advocate, facilitator and trainer who has worked in the non-profit and public service fields for over eight years. During her time as a public servant and child welfare professional she trained and licensed many LGBT foster/adoptive parents for the Dept. of Child Protection and Permanency and also participated in their Safe Space Program. Ms. Chiappano takes pride in working for an All Children/All Family recognized state that welcomes and celebrates LGBT families, educating and training families in areas related to trauma, child development, abuse/neglect and case practice. Prior to this work, she was a Resource Family Advocate at Foster and Adoptive Family Services, where her focus was to educate, advocate and assist families by utilizing CP&P policy to resolve issues and create positive change. She is committed to creating safe and affirming school environments.Ms. Chiappano enjoys spending time with her husband Pete, their dog Elsa and their four amazing kids. You may contact her at: chiappano@ gardenstateequality.org. The Clinton Chapter of Youth GLBT of Hunterdon County of NJ meets the first Thursday of every month from 6:00 pm-8:30 pm. LGBTQ+ youth, teens, young adults, parents and allies are all welcome to join us! Meetings are held at the North Branch County Library at 65 Halstead Street in Clinton. • College Scholarship applications are due at the August meeting and the winner will be announced at the September meeting. A $500 college scholarship will be awarded to an entering college freshman (Fall 2018), and made out to the entering college in the winning student's name. A letter will follow to the college explaining the essay contest and scholarship award. Applicants must submit their essay of no less than 1,000 words on or before the first Thursday in August (or submit it at our regularly scheduled meeting in Clinton that month). The winner will be announced at our September meeting.
