North Hunterdon High School's Theatre Organization will present the musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie, on March 2, 3, and 4! A rollicking spoof on the 1920's, Thoroughly Modern Millie follows the adventures of Kansas-born Millie Dillmount (played by senior Emily Decker), relocated in New York City to seek fortune and romance, in that order. Equipped with a plan to find a job, marry her boss, and live a life of luxury ever afterwards, Millie takes a room in the Hotel Priscilla, a boarding house run by the incognito ex-con and kidnapper, Mrs. Meers (senior Samantha Dolloff), and begins work as a secretary for Mr. Trevor Graydon (junior Jonah Lione). With another newcomer, Miss Dorothy Brown (senior Leah Gaidos), and a penniless paperclip salesman, Jimmy Smith (junior Jonathan Murry), Millie shares NYC adventures including a speakeasy stint that sends them to jail. Although she develops a fondness for Jimmy, she clings to her plan to marry her boss, who shows no interest in her. The plot twists when a young woman disappears inexplicably from the Hotel Priscilla, and when one of Mrs. Meers' henchmen, Ching Ho (senior James Craig), falls in love with Miss Dorothy, Meers' next intended victim. With high-energy dance numbers like "Thoroughly Modern Millie" and "Forget About the Boy", the show roars with 1920's style. Millie explains her decision to move to the city in "Not For the Life of Me", and ponders her feelings in "Jimmy". On his part, Jimmy initially sings "What Do I Need With Love", but shows his changed feelings in his duet with Millie, "I Turned the Corner". Mrs. Meers reveals her dark side in "They Don't Know", while Graydon insists on efficiency in his office theme song, "The Speed Test". The production required some unique skills, not the least of which was the extensive tap dancing. Three characters were coached to speak Chinese. Several singers polished the technique of patter-song, delivering words rapidly but with impeccable diction. For tickets, visit: https://northhunterdonhighschool.thundertix.com/events/123205, or message NHTOtickets@gmail.com. Performances are in the school theatre on Friday, March 2, and Saturday, March 3, at 7:00 p., and Sunday, March 4, at 2:00 pm. With book by Richard Morris and Dick Scanlan, and new music by Jeanine Tesori and Dick Scanlan, the show is produced by special arrangement with Music Theatre International.
