Running is a tremendous cardiovascular activity with numerous benefits. It is a high calorie burner, great for improving heart health and, because it is weight bearing, can also improve bone density and balance. However, due to the repetitive impact, it can also be quite taxing on the body. So as you increase your mileage and duration, be sure to add resistance training to your fitness routine along with balance and flexibility training. These exercise components can help make sure you are performing your best and will also help in reducing the chances of sustaining an injury. The best way to improve your running is by running. But it is difficult to run if you are injured. Keep your body strong by hitting the weights. Try adding lower body compound, multi-joint movements like squats, deadlifts and lunges to your routine. Working several muscles simultaneously promotes an effective and efficient workout. Do not neglect your upper body. Much of running is in the legs, but having a strong core and upper body will aid in maintaining form and help fight off fatigue. Performing upper body resistance exercises like pushups, seated rows, arm exercises and planks can help strengthen the upper body and core muscles. Lastly, round out your workout routine with some simple stretching or yoga to improve your flexibility and balance. This ensures that your body remains limber yet balanced which helps aid in your running ability. By incorporating these various training modes to your running routine, you will stay healthy, strong and balanced so you can keep on logging those miles! Volunteering to assist with tax return preparation for low-to-moderate income Hunterdon County area residents is a great way to help others while learning the ins-and-outs of tax preparation. Last year United Way's tax preparation volunteers helped bring back over $1.8 million to Hunterdon County residents and employees. No accounting experience is necessary. All that's required is a desire to help others who cannot prepare their basic tax returns or afford to pay a preparer. Volunteers are trained with Internal Revenue Service (IRS) tax materials and offered additional support through United Way of Hunterdon County. Through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA), volunteers learn how to prepare simple federal and state tax returns. Once certified, volunteers are assigned to VITA sites in neighborhood community centers, libraries and churches in locations convenient to VITA customers. The time commitment is about eight hours for in-person training and eight hours per week at a VITA site from the beginning of February through April 15. Our VITA sites electronically transmit tax returns (e-file). Not interested in crunching numbers, but still looking to help? Consider volunteering as a Volunteer Greeter. Greeters assist clients as they fill out paperwork, ensure clients have brought in all of the paperwork needed to complete a tax return, make reminder phone calls to clients, and provide clients with additional community resources they can access once their return has been completed. Spanish speakers are always needed to assist with this program. Orientation will be held in November.
