C A S A S h A W S E E K S A D v O C A T E S Every year there are more than 100,000 reports of child abuse or neglect in NJ. More than 10,000 are removed from their homes because the Court has found it to be too dangerous for them to remain in their homes. Court Appointed Special Advocates of Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren Counties (CASA SHaW) recruit, screen, train and supervise community volunteers to act as advocates in court for children living in foster care. CASA volunteers are appointed by a family court judge to discover the best possible outcome for an abused or neglected child's future as well as make recommendations that support the child's current needs. Volunteers receive support and supervision from a trained social worker throughout the duration of their cases. CASA SHaW is offering information sessions for prospective volunteers interested in learning more about this volunteer opportunity. Interested in becoming a CASA advocate? Visit: www.casashaw.org, call 908.689.5515, or email: info@casashaw.org. The Hunterdon County Department of Parks & Recreation has several options for your children to have some creative and educational fun this year. The Creative Theater campers will be acting on the stage in the Main Lodge at Echo Hill. Surrounded by woods and a lovely pond, the ambience is the perfect atmosphere for creativity. From August 21 to 25, 10:00 am to 2:30 pm (Friday until 4:00 pm), ages 8-12, $150/person. This production will be guided by the ideas of the campers; characters, plot and setting are all based on their ideas. The disciplines of the actor are first introduced through theatre games. Movement, voice, theatre terms and listening are practiced on day one and built on as the play is developed. The week culminates in a performance on Friday at 3:00 pm. Instructor is Joe Nowosielski. Local Illustrator, Lena Shiffman will be leading Art Camp for Young Artists (6-10) 9-11:00 am and Artists in Training Camp (11-15) 11:15 am-1:15 pm August 7-11 or August 21- 25 at the Arboretum, $110. Campers will learn the principles of painting and drawing in a classroom and outdoor setting. They will work using pencil, charcoal and paint on a variety of still life subjects. This week-long camp is designed to increase campers' understanding of color, composition and the proper use of materials. Registration is required; download a form from our website at: www. Co.Hunterdon.NJ.US/depts/parks/ProgramRegistrationForms. html. For more information, call the Parks Division at: 908.782.1158.
