Fingers get caught and pinched, doors fall for whatever reason, people (particularly children) try and race to get through the door opening while it is closing and are injured, the springs cause injuries, people get lacerations from hardware, tracks or the garage door window glass. Teach your children that garage doors are not toys. And, remember, garage doors need to be maintained and checked regularly for safe operation. Here's a list of things to look for and do to make sure your garage door is safe for your family and your pets: • Put it into manual mode and lift it: it should glide smoothly and stay open on its own three feet from the ground. If not, have a garage door professional counterbalance it. • Put a pet or child-size object on the ground (a small cardboard box or lightweight plastic laundry hamper, for example) and close the door. It should pop up as soon as it meets the obstacle. If not, call a professional. • Always make sure the garage door is completely closed before driving away. • Keep people clear of the garage-door opening while door is moving. • Do not allow children to play with door or opener, including the wall control and/ or remote. • Do not operate a door that has jammed or has a broken spring. • Do not install an opener on an improperly balanced garage door, as it may cause severe injury. • Periodically, visually check your door springs and hardware. • Periodically, oil door rollers, bearings and hinges.
