It's an exciting time. And while it should bring only happiness, it's always good to enter any agreement fully informed. Do you need a prenuptial agreement? If you or your significant other has a large amount of assets or debts, consider one – it can save expense and emotional anguish later. New Jersey has guidelines regulating these agreements. Prenups must: • be in writing and signed by both parties • include a statement of assets • be revoked or amended only by written consent of both parties Prenuptial agreements help determine, before problems arise, the rights and obligations of both spouses with regard to their property and assets, provided the agreements do not violate public policy. This includes rights and obligations to joint and separate property; wills, trusts, insurance death benefits and terms or elimination of spousal support. Prenups cannot, however, determine anything relating to child support or custody matters. What happens to the ring if the engagement doesn't work out? People in broken engagements struggle with this question all the time. Here are some facts: • New Jersey considers the engagement ring a "conditional gift" – a gift given with the expectation that something (marriage) will take place in exchange. • Because it is a conditional gift, the law says the engagement ring is the property of the giver until the expectation is fulfilled. • Once the expectation is fulfilled, the ring becomes the property of the recipient. • New Jersey courts take a "no fault" approach to broken engagements, meaning it doesn't matter who called it off or why. • If you need to take the return of the ring to court, the ring's value will determine where you file your complaint. • If the ring was altered (new setting, upgraded diamond, etc.) during your marriage, the ring could then be considered by the courts to be joint property and subject to equitable distribution. Marriage to the right person for the right reasons is wonderful! Having knowledge about some martial legalities beforehand can only help should it not work out. – Victor Rotolo LAW FIRM THE ROTOLO 502 U.S. 22 Lebanon, NJ 08833 908∙534∙7900 www.RotoloLawFirm.com Victor A. The Hunterdon County YMCA is working to help children have the Best. Summer. Ever! Children eagerly anticipate the freedom of summer. However, often a week (sometimes even days) after school ends, parents hear the dreaded two- word phrase: "I'm bored." The Hunterdon County YMCA wants to make sure that children have their best summer ever thanks to a variety of programs and activities that stimulate both mind and body. "It's important for children to have an outlet to play and learn throughout the summer," says Kristin Heimall, Senior Program Director. "Through a variety of summer camp options, the Y supports all children in the community and helps them discover their potential." A traditional camp experience is found at Camp Carr in Clinton Township and South Camp at South Hunterdon High School in Lambertville, while Sports Camp is held at the Deer Path Branch in Flemington. There are also over 20 specialty camp options, including travel camp, horseback riding, Mad Science, Bricks 4 Kidz (Lego), basketball, ballet, tennis, flag football, extreme sports, baseball, cheerleading, soccer, lacrosse and more! With this many options, parents can find the ideal camp for each child. The Community Impact and Service Program, which was launched last summer through a partnership with America's Grow a Row, will be available again. Campers ages 11 – 14, who are selected through an application process, will be guided through hands on experience that will broaden their knowledge of community impact and service. They will spend half the day at America's Grow a Row and the remainder of the day at Camp Carr. Whichever camp you choose, the Y provides children with adventure, healthy fun, personal growth and friendships that can take a so-so summer and turn it into a memory that lasts a lifetime! Y camps provide a welcoming environment for kids where they can belong, build relationships, develop character and discover their potential. Heimall says, "Our goal is to ensure that kids in our camp programs go home with so much excitement about all they've accomplished and enjoyed, they can't wait to come back the next day. Our talented staff are dedicated to making that happen every day." Parents can save money by registering early to take advantage of special Spring pricing. All camp fees will increase on May 1.
