This means focusing on functional whole body movements that are pain free and efficient. These patterns encourage BALANCE, CORE STRENGTH, overall muscular strength, muscle power and reaction time which is part of proprioception. Proprioception is when the body knows where it is without having to look and reacts accordingly. So how does training the whole body to move better translate into healthy aging? Think of all the things we do on a daily basis and take for granted; walking up a flight of steps, bending down to pick something off the floor, lifting groceries, reaching into cabinets overhead, stepping over an object on the floor, etc.. When we train the whole body, it is ready for us when we need it most or when we simply need to perform a daily task. When we train for balance and strength we are training for life; the list of activities we can perform with little risk of falling grows tremendously. Look for exercises such as: Pilates, Yoga, body weight exercises and balance and core strength training. Some of these exercises may involve performing balance and strength exercises on an unstable surface or dome which results in unpredictable challenges to the body. This type of proprioceptive training and physical stimulation results in head-to-toe integrated strength gains and helps to develop the body's awareness and reaction time. In conclusion, look for exercises that encourage: • proprioceptive training • multiple muscle groups • whole body rhythmic movement • strength, flexibility and cardiovascular benefits • proper alignment and healthy movement patterns • muscle power Bring this article in with you to one of our Wellness Center locations and enjoy a complimentary one day guest pass on us! h u N t E r d o N h E a L t h a N d w E L L N E s s C E N t E r L o C a t i o N s : Whitehouse Station: 537 Route 22 East, Whitehouse Station, NJ 08889 Clinton: 1738 Route 31 North, Clinton, NJ 08809 The LAMPLIGHTER Quality Lamp Repair Stephen P.
