Should your company join the countless others who use social media as a marketing tool? Probably. First, here are a few things to know. Every social media channel has a unique personality: Facebook is a social networking platform where users connect with "friends;" Instagram is a social messaging platform where users share photos and videos via smartphones; and Twitter, defined as a micro-blogging platform, lets users keep their network informed without the effort of publishing a full blog. And then there's LinkedIn. LinkedIn is a professional networking platform. Individuals use it to post resumes and make connections within their industry. It's a place to highlight your accomplishments and qualifications; not your lunch menu or weekend plans. Your profile information, including your photo, should have a professional quality to it. Companies can benefit from LinkedIn, too, with a company page. Statistics show half of all LinkedIn members have said they are more likely to do business with a company they've engaged with on LinkedIn than not. To create a LinkedIn company page, you first need a personal LinkedIn profile, the strength of which must be classified as "intermediate" or "All Star" according to LinkedIn criteria. Then, to reap the most benefits from your company page: • Use an eye-catching banner photo that conveys what your business is about. • Make the most of your company description. Be concise; use keywords and phrases you want your company to come up for in Internet searches. • Use the products and services pages to help your visitors find the solutions they're seeking. • Post changes in your business when they occur. There is nothing more frustrating than reaching out to someone, or for something, that is no longer available. • Engage your audience. Use self-serving information minimally. Don't let sales pitches be the overriding theme of your posts.
