A lot of trainees deal with not knowing how to program their own workouts, so I have outlined three key factors to help create better fitness programs: 1) Remove Your Bias. The easiest solution is to have an experienced training mentor or other qualified professional write your program for you. It's human nature to favor your strong points and conveniently neglect your weak areas when you write your own programs. This is one of the many reasons why having a personal trainer pays itself back several times over. 2) Don't fret over the exercises. Individual exercises are just one of the many aspects of a training program. Instead of concentrating on what exercises to do, focus more on the sets, reps, rest time and lifting tempo. The exercises don't make the program; how you perform the exercises does. 3) Keep a training log. If you write down what you are going to do, there is a much greater chance of it actually happening. If you want to see how you did six months or a year ago, it's essential to have those notes to refer to. Tracking a training log will keep you more consistent in your workouts. Although a training log is not a direct part of a fitness program, it will help actually execute the program. Creating a fitness program may be a daunting task and does require some skill. However, by letting a personal trainer evaluate your program, focusing on the "numbers" behind an exercise and keeping a training log you will create a better exercise program tailored to you!
