Google defines duplicate content as "…substantive blocks of content within or across domains that either completely match other content or are appreciably similar." It has been rumored that Google severely penalizes websites for any duplicate content. The rumor is true – but only when the content is "deliberately duplicated across domains in an attempt to manipulate search engine rankings and win more traffic," per Google's Search Console. In cases such as this, the offending website may be blacklisted by Google, thus preventing the site from appearing in any search results. While a Google blacklisted website is extremely rare, it does happen. However, the mere threat of blacklisting has some folks going out of their way to avoid duplicate content completely. This is a good practice, and one that should be adhered to as much as possible. At the very least, duplicate content confuses the search engines, which may impact the site's performance. So why take that chance? It isn't easy to avoid all duplication completely. Luckily the search engines understand this also. Here are some ways to keep duplicate content to a minimum: • Avoid "canned" copy. You may have access to content prepared by another entity – your corporate headquarters, the manufacturer of a product you distribute, the group issuing the award you just received. Rather than using this material verbatim, summarize the essential points; focus on what makes you or your company unique; and provide an external link to the source of the original copy. • Treat overlapping products or services separately. While promoting your products and services on your website, devote separate pages to the distinct characteristics of each only mentioning an overlap briefly; then include an internal link to the page describing that item in more detail. • Pay attention to all Internet listings. Online press releases and industry directories can contain information similar to what appears on your website. Rather than "cutting-and-pasting" when preparing these materials, write fresh content aimed at your target audience. • Respect copyrights. Passing off someone else's work as your own won't only raise red flags with the search engines, but the practice can land you in trouble with the law for plagiarism and copyright infringement. Original content, well-written for a targeted audience, helps to promote you as a leader in your field and presents your company in its best light. So write on and share your experience and expertise; you will benefit by doing so and so will your website's performance. – Patricia Birchenough, President, Hunterdon Business Services, LLC • www.HunterdonBiz.com p a i n t W i t H u s ! ! !
