I'm happy to inform you that there is a very simple and effective approach to designing a general strength training routine. The trick is to not focus on individual muscle groups, but rather on functional movement patterns. The simplest way to view functional upper body movement is by considering exercises that fall within the categories of "horizontal push" and "horizontal pull" (think pushing forward like a Chest Press and pulling back like a Row) as well as "vertical push" and "vertical pull" (think pushing up like a Shoulder Press and pulling down like a Lat Pull-Down). In terms of functional lower body movement, think "squat" (which includes Leg Press) and "hip hinge." For those unfamiliar with the hip hinge, this movement includes activities that focus on flexing and extending at the hips while minimizing movement in the back and knees such as during the Deadlift and various hip extension exercises. In summary, you will undoubtedly have a well-rounded functional strength training program which utilizes the major muscle groups as long as you incorporate at least one exercise that falls within each of the six primary movement categories of upper body horizontal push and pull, upper body vertical push and pull and lower body hip hinge and squat. Be sure to seek out a movement/fitness professional such as a physical therapist or personal fitness trainer if you have any questions as to which exercises fall within these categories and which are most appropriate for your current level of fitness.
