A form of exercise that I follow both personally and professionally is known as "HIRT." Similar to HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training), HIRT (High Intensity Resistance Training) is used during resistance training and does not allow for any inordinate rest periods. HIRT essentially takes the HIIT model and flips it upside down (long periods of intense training followed by short periods of rest.) The reason for this is to keep one's metabolism and muscle stimulation to stay active for the longest period of time, thus burning an incredible amount of calories and working muscles to their maximum potential. My favorite HIRT routine is a technique called "drop sets". The purpose of drop sets is to completely exhaust the muscle you are working and get the maximum energy and stimulation that it is able to exert. When completing a set, most pick a weight that is a struggle to complete a particular amount of reps; 15, 12, 10 etc. Once they reach this number, they put the weights down and rest. "Dropping" the weight to a lower amount allows me to continue working the muscle at a lighter weight. The amount of times I drop the weight either for myself or my client can vary but normally 2-3 times works best and I generally drop the weight to an amount that I can successfully complete the rep amount that I used for the initial set. I do, however, want to advise anyone considering using drop sets or HIRT as a part of their exercise routine. It can be extremely difficult and requires almost all of one's energy to complete a workout. HIRT is intended for experienced serious exercisers and is looking for something to push them to another level and achieve the best results possible.
