N e W t e s t i N g m e t H o d F o r F u N g a l t o e N a i l s Fungus toenails affect millions of people every day. Toenail fungus, or onychomycosis, is an infection underneath the surface of the nail caused by fungi. When the tiny organisms take hold, the nail often becomes darker in color and smells foul. If ignored, the infection can spread and possibly impair your ability to walk. The more widespread the fungal infection is, the harder it is to treat. A fungus can cause toenails to become discolored, crumbly and flaking. If fungus toenails are not treated correctly they can develop into extremely painful thickened ugly toenails which make it very difficult to cut or trim. Millions of older Americans visit podiatrists every two months to have their fungus toenails cut and smoothed down. When fungus toenails become this severe it is virtually impossible to treat them or cure them. It's recommended that as soon as you see a change in your toenails you should visit a podiatrist right away. There is a new testing method for fungal toenails. Your podiatrist will cut a small piece of nail without any pain or discomfort and send it to the proper lab. Bako Pathology Lab has created a new method in identifying fungus called a Genetic Molecular Test, which can identify the genus and species of a particular fungus, yeast, mold or spore and an accurate pathogen identification for prompt and targeted anti-fungal treatment. As a clinical lab test (such as bloodwork), molecular genetic studies are often paid for in-full by insurers. Organism Genus may be necessary for preauthorization of new topical anti-fungal medications. This method offers a 25% higher sensitivity overall and twice as much sensitivity when detecting certain types of fungus. When the results come back to your podiatrist he will go over them with you completely and discuss all options of treatments for the fungus. If treated early you can get a complete clearing of your nails. Treatment options range from topicals, prescription oral medications and laser treatment for fungal nail. The pathology report will indicate which would be best for you. My recommendation is if you have a toenail fungus, a foot injury, infection, or ingrown toenail, please have it seen by a local podiatrist.
