While sadness is a reaction to difficult life events and is a painful emotion, it is only one of the symptoms of depression. Sadness is a natural emotion or feeling that occurs when we experience negative events. We feel sadness over the loss of a relationship, our hopes and dreams, or a material object. Some or most of our energy is drained and we feel empty depending on the level of sadness that we are experiencing. It is good to express sadness shortly after we experience it. Deny- ing it or not expressing our sadness can mean it will take a much longer time to emotionally heal and can put us at risk for depression. When we are sad a lot of our energy is drained. Admitting that we are sad about something will usually shorten the time it takes to get through sadness. Not expressing it and ruminating about what we are sad about usually means a much longer time for healing. Also, if we ruminate about it and burden other people with our sadness we can easily get stuck in our sadness and move into a depressed state. In order to emotionally heal from sadness, it is important to notice where and how you feel in your body. Try to figure out where you feel it in your body and then ask yourself, "How does the sadness feel in my body? Does it feel angry, weak, empty, heavy etc?" Profound sadness may require professional help. Depression includes sadness but also brings more complicated physical and emotional symptoms including loss of interest in activi- ties, hopelessness, negative thinking, disinterest in activities, weight loss or gain, insomnia, oversleeping, agitation, feelings of worthless- ness or excessive guilt, recurrent thoughts of death, and anger. A combination of psychotherapy and antidepressants can usually help to get through both extreme sadness and depression in a shorter time.
