Clinical depression can cause a person to feel sad, hopeless, worthless, and helpless for long periods of time. The feelings can be so intense that these cause physical symptoms and impact everyday functioning. Sleep problems are frequently experienced by people with moderate to severe depressive illness and can worsen depression. Sleep depriva- tion can become a vicious cycle in which depression can cause sleep problems, and sleep problems worsen depression. Insomnia symptoms can include too little sleep, problems getting to sleep, and often awakening throughout the night, and not being able to fall back to sleep. Anxiety is often present with sleep problems and prevents adequate sleep. Sleep research shows that we need seven or eight hours of sound sleep to func- tion optimally. A number of bodily symptoms can be affected by inadequate sleep. Insufficient sleep can also cause weight gain. Without sufficient sleep, learning and memory pathways cannot work well, and it can be harder to focus, learn new tasks and remember what you learn. To help with sleep try regular exercise, meditation, avoiding bright screens (IPads, laptops TV etc.) before bedtime) and avoid coffee, alcohol or nicotine in the evening. Take a warm shower before bed. If you can't sleep then get out of bed and do some light activity like listening to gentle music. Wear earplugs if noise is a problem and a sleep mask to block unwanted light. Sleep problems can be a sign of trauma. Insomnia, nightmares, flashbacks, constant fear and anxiety can be symptoms of trauma. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a highly effective treatment for trauma-based depression, anxiety and sleep disorders.
