N e w w a t e r H e a t e r s t a N d a r d s e f f e c t i v e a p r i l 1 6 , 2 0 1 5 By Anne Thornton, President, MSI Plumbing & Remodeling On April 16, 2015 sweeping changes that will effect the entire water heater industry go into law. These new federally mandated requirements call for higher energy factor (EF) ratings on virtually all residential gas, electric, oil and tankless gas water heaters. What does this mean for the average consumer? Water heaters pro- duced after April 16 will be larger, more complex and more expensive. Why? Because in order to meet the higher energy factor ratings, they will require more insulation, use newer flue baffling technologies, use electronic ignition in lieu of the standing pilot or any combination of these. Many water heaters are placed in "tight" quarters and since they will be larger, changes may have to made to accom - modate the larger heater or owners will have to go to a lower capacity water heater to fit in the current space. The new water heaters will be at least 2" taller and 2" wider. Energy Savings Impact: It is estimated that the average homeowner will save $365 per year with the new style water heaters.
