These aren't just quirky customs; they're the law. A number of what many of us perceive to be silly or archaic laws remain on the books today. Some border on the absurd, while others are just plain funny: • Men are prohibited from knitting during fishing season. • Detaining a homing pigeon is against the law. • Slurping your soup is outlawed in Ocean City. • In Newark, vendors are prohibited from selling ice cream after 6 p.m. to anyone without a doctor's note. • Trenton prohibits enjoying a pickle on your burger while watching football on Sundays. • And in Elizabeth, where I grew up and served as a police officer before becoming a lawyer, it is illegal for a woman to walk down Broad Street on Sundays without a petticoat. (And no, I never arrested a woman on Broad Street on a Sunday because she didn't have a petticoat.) While some of these silly laws seem fabricated, many actually do have a basis in fact – only they've been exaggerated over time or quoted out of context. Take for example the following which appears on a list of silly laws in New Jersey: "It is illegal to wear a bullet-proof vest while committing a murder." As written, that statement may leave many of us shaking our heads at its absurdity. The actual law states that anyone who wears "bullet-proof armor" while committing murder, manslaughter or other violent felony also would be found guilty of another crime. And, if the culprit attempts to get away while still wearing the vest, the charges can be upgraded from third-degree to second- or first-degree. Out of context, the law seems silly but, in actuality, it makes sense. The next time you hear of a silly law, it might be interesting to investigate its source. Just don't frown while doing so if you happen to be in Bernards Township – frowning is outlawed there! Enjoy your April! – Victor Rotolo Victor A.
