3 N o v e m b e r 2 0 1 4 B a l a n c e by Jen Magro, Personal Trainer/Group Fitness Instructor People often talk about their lack of balance, saying they can't balance on one leg or feel unsteady when they stand or walk. Being confident in our ability to balance is very important for our quality of life. Disruptions in balance tend to be more prominent as we grow older and can have many causes. These include but are not limited to: 1. Changes in vision 2. Inner ear disorders, such as vertigo 3. Changes in muscular strength, endurance and coordination. After consulting with your doctor to rule out any medical causes, beginning a REGULAR exercise program (3-5 days a week) is very important. Regular exercise builds strength, coordination and endurance which can help to support and balance us. A simple exercise to try is the single leg balance. Stand facing the wall with one or both hands on it and lift one leg up in front of you, holding for 30 seconds, keeping a tall lifted posture. If you feel balanced, take one or both hands away from the wall. Unfortunately, people mistakenly think we cannot improve our muscular strength into our later years, but this is very far from the truth. At the very least we can maintain the strength we have – studies have proven we can increase the strength in our muscles well into our 80's. It was when Matthew was two that we noticed Autistic characteristics. By the time he was five, it was confirmed that he was on the spectrum with aspects of Autism and Aspergers, ADHD and Central Auditory Processing Disorder. These labels were just that -- labels. Matthew is indeed a special boy! And labels weren't going to define him! Matthew started writing in second grade. His in-class support teacher (aka special-ed teacher) said at the end of the year, after Matthew had completed over 35 little books telling stories about friends, animals, places and things, that "Matthew is destined to write a book when he gets older and he should never stop writing!" Well, he has certainly followed that advice! It may have taken FIVE years, but write a book he did! We feel that Matthew possesses gifts. We don't look at his disabilities with dis - dain; in fact, it's the cerebral perspectives that make him someone with depth and vast intelligence. He's 18, a senior, award winning biology student, varsity fencer going to Voorhees High School. His ambition is to become a zoologist. His passion is research. Paleontology, taxonomy, evolution, astronomy, anthropology, to name a few of his interests... dinner table conversations can be very interesting in our house! It is with great pride, enthusiasm and congratulations that I present to you my son, Matthew E. Goldsmith's first published book of poems, Dreams of Bacon. It took five years to write and compile the approximately 95 poems that are on these pages. Aside from the fact that I'm Matthew's Mom, the feedback from the folks who have read his work thus far is astounding! When you consider he started writing at the age of 13 and that Matthew is on the spectrum with all kinds of issues, it's a miracle to actually see this through to a bona-fide printed copy! Please contact me if you're interested in reading these marvelous words of prose. The cost of the book for the first 20 who contact me will be an introductory $8 per book (+ shipping). Please either email or private messenger me with your mail - ing information. We intend to donate part of the proceeds from the book to Autism Awareness. This book is a testament to kids all over – having Spectrum Disorders and disabilities does not mean it's DISABLING! Help support this cause, buy a book and enjoy some beautiful poetry!
