By: Kim Karsh - RYT ® Registered Yoga Teacher, Certified Therapeutic Yoga Teacher, ACE ® Certified Personal Trainer You might think that you can't practice yoga because you lack stability or you aren't flexible. On the contrary, yoga is for everyone no matter where your physical abilities lie. In fact yoga is uniquely designed to accommodate all bodies. It is especially suited for older individuals. Yoga can be one of the best practices for seniors to exercise, improve bal- ance and flexibility. The beauty of yoga is that it is about moving according to your body's needs and modifying postures and mindset accordingly. When we practice within our needs we find and acknowledge our strengths as well as those areas that need special attention and care. Why practice? Where to begin? Much research has been done on the relationship between regular yoga practice and overall well-being. It has been shown to stimulate the release of "feel good hormones," which help to alleviate pain, promote relaxation and healthy sleep habits, and provide relief from anxiety, stress and depression. I have had the great privilege of practicing with a very special group of courageous and sometimes hilarious individuals over the last six years and have seen first hand what it means for them. I truly believe that I have learned more from these yogis of a "certain age" than I have imparted! So I asked the experts and conducted my own very unscientific study of this group of 100 students and asked them to tell you what the benefits are for them. Here is a small sample of their list of benefits: "My balance is better and I can stretch to reach things up high." "My flexibility is improved which makes it easier to move and play with my grandkids!" "My life is more peaceful; l get frenetic if I miss yoga class." "My lower back pain is reduced!" "It's not competitive! I have increased stamina and it provides challenge and discipline!" "I feel more body awareness and improved posture!" "I feel more confident and independent!" "I don't feel ashamed of my body's ailments; I can modify postures and take good care of myself!" You can go online and read the studies to learn more about the many benefits of regular yoga practice. But why not try for yourself? Choose a beginner or chair yoga class and bring an open mind and heart. You might find a new and improved way of living! Be kind to yourself and take good care.
