When I was growing up, it was not uncommon for kids to pile into the
back of the family station wagon, completely untethered, for a road
trip. Safety laws were much more lax back then but, of course, our roadways
were much less congested. Today, a number of laws exist to keep us all safe on
the road, especially children.
According to AAA, car accidents are the number one contributing cause of
death to children over six months. Car safety seats and laws regulating their
use are intended to reduce these tragedies. The unfortunate fact, however, is
that three-quarters of all car seats are used improperly which may be due, in
part, to the ever-changing laws regarding their use.
This past June, the Women's and Children's Committee of the State Assembly
approved a bill that once again would change certain car seat safety regulations.
The pending bill requires all children under two and weighing less than 30
pounds to be in rear-facing car seats equipped with five-point harnesses. (Cur-
rent laws suggest parents use rear-facing seats for babies up to one year and
weighing up to 20 pounds.) The bill also urges all children under eight and
shorter than 57 inches to use a five-point safety harness and gives parents the
discretion to use either rear-facing or forward-facing seats for children between
two and four.
While the number of car seats on the market today allows parents to choose the
seat best suited to their child and their vehicle, it can confuse the installation
process; the correct method for one seat may not apply to another. That is why
it is recommended that car seats be inspected by a trained technician.
Hunterdon County residents can go to the County Complex on Route 12 in
Flemington for an inspection; inspections are held the first Tuesday of every
month from 5 to 8 p.m. Additionally, a number of local police departments of-
fer free inspections as a community service. It only takes a few minutes of your
time to prevent a lifetime of tragedy.
Make an inspection appointment today to protect those precious
little ones we hold so dear. – Victor Rotolo
