I enjoy swimming and I am certainly not alone. Swimming is the
fourth most popular recreational activity in America; the number
one rated activity among children age 7 through 17, according to the
Centers for Disease Control.
As popular as swimming is, however, the majority of us may not swim as well as
we think we do. According to the American Red Cross, 80% of people surveyed
reported they could swim, but only 56% were actually capable of performing
basic skills considered essential for keeping safe in the water. Swimming comes
with risks. So, if you are one of the 10.4 million people in this country
who own a pool and are planning to host a pool party this summer,
take precautions. Vigilance is key to hosting a safe pool party whether your
guests are children, teens or adults. The following tips may help you ensure
both a safe and an enjoyable time.
• Never leave children unattended in or near a pool, even briefly;
60% of the drownings involving children four years old and
younger occur in swimming pools.
• Provide adequate supervision. Make sure parents accompany
young children to your party. Appoint a lifeguard for all pool
parties, including parties for older kids and teens. The lifeguard
should monitor the pool during the entire party, even if the party
activities are going on out of the pool, in case a child wanders back
to the pool area.
• Set and post pool rules prominently. Rules should limit horseplay
that could lead to injury, for example – no running or diving.
• Monitor the area. Keep glass away from the pool area; make
sure chemical levels are safe and electrical equipment is properly
grounded.
• Be prepared. Keep a phone and first aid kit near the pool in case
of accidents.
• Make sure all toys are put away after the party so children aren't
tempted back to the pool area. At all times, keep the gate to your
pool locked to prevent tragedies and limit your liability. Most
importantly, if you own a pool, take the time to improve your
swimming skills and teach your children to swim. It could save a life.
On average, 10 people drown every day in this country, 20% of them
are under age 15. Take water safety seriously while enjoying the sum-
mer. Time goes by quickly; enjoy! – Victor Rotolo
