Forster t h e C L i n t o n t o W n s h i P h i s t o r i C a L P r e s e r v a t i o n C o m m i s s i o n Hamden Historic District b y F r a n k W h i t e The primary goal of the Clinton Township Historic Preser- vation Commission is to help our community preserve its rich historical heritage. Within the Township, along the banks of the South Branch of the Raritan River in an area now occupied by the YMCA's Camp Carr, lies a sleepy little hamlet called Hamden. Other than a road by this name that runs through it, there is little to remind us that this area was once a bustling little community. Hamden was founded by two brothers; John and Philip Grandin. They started a thriving mill enterprise in Hamden along the Raritan River about the year 1760. Their mills flourished for many years and continued afterwards under several different owners. Over the ensuing decades, a community grew up around these mills as depicted in the c. 1860 map above. There are a few Q-3 18th century houses in this Hamden area that survive today. They are, by the name of their original owners: (1) John Grandin in the center of Hamden, (2) John Shader to the north, (3) Peter Van Buskirk Sr. and Abraham Shurt to the east, (4) Capt. Jacob Gearhart to the south and the (5) Col. Charles Stewart site to the west. There are also other buildings depicted on this c. 1860 map that are still in existence today. In the upcoming months, the Clinton Township Historic Preservation Commission is going to investigate making Hamden our fourth regis - tered historic district, joining Annandale, Cokesbury and Readingsburg. Public Archaeology Program at the Christoffel Vought House, July 7-12 and 14-19, 2014. Research Focus: A buried foundation southeast of the house, not damaged by later construction, the base of a 12 x 14 foot structure interpreted as an "ancillary house," which was used by Germans to house older relatives. This structure may have had other uses. It could have later housed enslaved Africans who lived at the site after the Revolution. Excavation will expose and straddle a central section along each foundation wall to identify the evidence of doorways, win - dows, hearths, and to collect a sample of deposits from each side of the structure. Two pits will be dug to collect deposits from the interior of the structure. They are caused by tiny cuts or nicks in the skin. Once they enter the skin ,the pounding on the feet causes them to get deeper or to spread. There are many different treatments available for plantar warts. Many of them can be very painful and have a long recovery. Utilizing NASA technology, a new cryosurgical device called CRYOPEN has been developed. Long thin Copper aluminum alloy tubes are kept frozen to -140° in a liquid helium chamber. It is completely safe and no gases are exposed to the environment. Treatments involve first having the top layer of the dead skin trimmed away. This is done painlessly. Then the properly sized tube is applied directly to each of the warts for approximately 60-90 seconds. There is minimal discomfort during and after the treatment. These treatments slowly remove the warts and are performed on a monthly basis. Many warts require only 2 to 3 treatments. Bandages and medications are usually not required. This technique is very child friendly because it requires no needles or injec- tions, minimal discomfort and performed quick as 60-90 seconds.
