Visit the HC Tricentennial Celebration website at www.hunterdon300th.org often, as we update this site daily. We are planning many special events, lectures, tours, fundraisers and more. Join us as we celebrate our 300th Year! There are several exciting events coming up in February– • February 1: The History of Slavery in Hunterdon County. In honor of Black History Month, County Historian Stephanie Stevens shares the true story of slavery in Hunterdon County. Refreshments will follow. Location: North County Branch Library, 65 Halstead Street, Clinton at 2pm. • February 8: The History of Slavery in Flemington. In honor of Black History Month, Flemington Presbyterian Historian Glenn Hooper will give a lecture on slavery in Flemington followed by a cemetery tour with Leslie Leith to view slaves' graves. Refreshments follow. Location: Flemington Presbyterian Church, Main Street, Flemington at 10am. • February 8: The Architecture and Interpretation of the 1759 Vought House - The Only Loyalist House Museum in NJ. In honor of Christopher Vought's Birthday (February 24, 1714), enjoy a series of lectures around his life. Historical architect Michael Margulies, AIA, will discuss the architecture of the Vought House. Following a short walk, Michael will provide his expert insight as he tours us around the house and grounds. Location: Clinton Township Middle School Cafeteria at 1pm. • February 9: Organ Recital by J. Jay Smith. In honor of the 100 year anniversary of the Austin Pipe Organ installation at the Flemington Presbyterian Church, enjoy an organ recital by J. Jay Smith, Director of Music/Organist of Flemington Presbyterian Church. This performance duplicates the dedicatory recital played by Norman Landis, the church's organist in 1914. Location: Flemington Presbyterian Church, Main Street, Flemington at 2pm. • February 12: Lincoln's Address in Trenton, Formerly Hunterdon County. Celebrate Lincoln's Birthday with historian, columnist and author Dominick Mazzagetti as he details Lincoln's famous train stop on his way to his inaugeration. Why a discussion about an event that happened in Trenton? Because Trenton was originally in Hunterdon County. Refreshments follow. Location: Main Branch of the County Library, County Complex, 314 Route 12, Flemington at 7pm. • February 15: The Loyalist John Vought, A Man of Honor. Vought Historian Don Sherblom continues our series around John Vought's life and shares more about the Palatine Vought Family and why John Vought was a man of honor and integrity even though he remained loyal to the Crown. Refreshments follow. Location: North County Branch Library, 65 Halstead Street, Clinton at 2pm. • February 16: Tewksbury Township Historical Society's 25th Anniversary Open House celebrates the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Tewksbury Historical Society. Enjoy their collections and what has been acquired over the past several years. Refreshments provided. Location: 60 Water Street, Lebanon from 11am - 4pm. • February 22: Hunterdon Conflicts - Loyalist V. Patriots. If you think nothing ever happened in Hunterdon County, come listen and learn from Chip Riddle as he discusses the midnight arrest at the Loyalist Vought House in Clinton Township, the raid on Thomas Jones Tavern in Annandale, the Battle of Two Bridges and other activities in the area during this final Vought lecture. Refreshements follow. Location: North County Branch Library, 65 Halstead Street, Clinton at 2pm. • February 22: Paul Robeson Returns to Flemington! Black History Month continues with a special performance by Paul Robeson Re-Enactor Baritone Garrett McQueen who will sing from Robeson's repertoire. Robeson took voice lessons from the Director of the Flemington Choir School (the home of the Hunterdon County Tricentennial Committee); it is fitting that this performance is in a beautiful building that Robeson would have seen when he came to town to thank her for promoting him. Refreshments follow. Location: Flemington Presbyterian Church, Main Street, Flemington at 7:30pm. • February 23: A Dramatic Dialogue Between Dr. Larison and Silvia Dubois. Presented by the East Amwell Historical Commission. In an extended interview in 1883 Silvia Dubois, then nearly 100 years old, told her life story to Dr. Cornelius Wilson Larison–a fascinating view of slave life and the life of the uneducated free black in the North during the 18th and 19th centuries. This year's event honors Lisa and Peter Verniero for their many years contributing to SAFE and our community as volunteers, fundraisers and contributors. This event celebrates the courage and resilience of local survivors who have experienced domestic and sexual abuse, while raising funds to sustain SAFE in Hunterdon's life-changing mission in the community. The 2014 Evening of Awareness features gourmet food stations, live music, silent and live auctions and an opportunity to connect with friends and colleagues (event tickets $150 each). V a l e n t i n e ' s D ay P a r t y at S p r i n g R u n S c h o o l for Area Children with Special Needs Spring Run School at CEA in Flemington invites special needs students to celebrate Valentine's Day on Wednesday, February 12 from 4 to 6 pm. FREE! Open to special needs students (7th– 12th grades in any school). Parents and siblings welcome! Music, DJ, games, refreshments, activities and areas specially set up (offering sensory play and a quieter environment as needed by some children with autism spectrum disorders).
