There was something sad and beautiful about it — the ending and beginning of things." ~ Jacqueline Woodson, 'If You Come Soly' B u i l d i n g S t r e n g t h f o r a h e a l t h i e r l i f e By: Cliff Zuniga - NASM certified Personal Trainer When most people think about fitness, they focus on losing weight or improving their appearance. While those goals are important, one of the best investments we can make in our long-term health is to build and maintain strength. Why Strength Matters: As we age, we naturally begin to lose muscle mass and strength if we are not actively working to maintain them. This can affect our balance, mobility, metabolism, and ability to perform everyday activities. For instance, according to the Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation approximately 10 million Americans have Osteoporosis and another 44 million have low bone density, placing them at increased risk. The good news is that strength training can help slow this process, it's never too late to start! Strength training doesn't have to mean lifting extremely heavy weights. Resistance bands, dumbbells, machines, bodyweight exercises, and functional movements such as squats, lunges, rows, and presses can all be effective. The key is consistency and gradually challenging your body over time. For busy adults, two to three focused strength-training sessions per week for an hour can be an excellent starting point. The goal isn't perfection; it's creating a routine that fits your lifestyle and can be maintained. Fitness Is Not One-Size-Fits-All: As a Personal Trainer, I have had the opportunity to train seniors, adults, and teenagers, and one lesson continues to stand out: every individual has a different starting point. Some individuals that I have worked with are conscious about their weight, others may be about confidence, while some are concerned about knowledge in using strength training machines properly. I currently train clients at both Hunterdon Health and Wellness Center locations, working with people at different stages of their health and fitness journeys. Every program I design is tailored to the individual because fitness is not one-size-fits-all. It is important for me to meet my clients where they are, understand their goals and abilities, and create a realistic path toward improvement. I want to be the catalyst that helps my clients improve their health, build confidence, and become stronger versions of themselves. Focus on Progress: Fitness should be part of our lifestyle and not something we only prioritize when we want to lose weight or prepare for a special event. How we move, what we eat, how we sleep, and how we manage stress all contribute to our overall health and quality of life. Instead of focusing solely on the scale, pay attention to improvements in your strength, stamina, mobility, and body composition. Small consistent changes such as walking more, Dr visits, eating nutritious foods, drinking more water, strength training, and getting adequate sleep can make a meaningful difference. Fitness is not just about how you look today. It's about building a stronger, healthier body that can serve you for years to come. Keep moving. Keep progressing. Keep building strength! h u n t e r d o n h e a l t h a n d W e l l n e S S C e n t e r l o C at i o n S : 537 Route 22 E., Whitehouse Station, NJ 08889 1738 Route 31 North, Clinton, NJ 08809 b e e h i V e s o C i e t y G r A n D o p e n i n G Beehive Society is a curated vintage furniture, home decor, and design services company based in Pittstown.
