S u m m e r S w e a t : w h y e x e r c i S i n G o u t d o o r S S u P e r c h a r G e S y o u r h e a l t h By: Charlotte Vitale - Fitness Trainer, Doctorate of Physical Therapy & Kinesiology Graduate of the University of Rhode Island Summer isn't just beach-day season! It's nature's invitation to take your workouts outside. And science says you absolutely should. When the days get longer and the sun shines brighter, your body and brain respond in ways that make outdoor exercise powerful. For starters, sunlight boosts vitamin D, which supports bone health, immune function, and mood regulation. Many Americans are deficient year-round, so even 10–20 minutes of sun exposure during a walk or bike ride can make a meaningful difference. Meanwhile, the warm weather naturally encourages more consistent movement, and research shows that people are more likely to stick to exercise routines when they enjoy the environment they're in. Of course, summer brings heat, so hydration and sun protection matter! Drinking water regularly, avoiding peak midday sun, and choosing breathable clothing help keep your body performing at its best. But the real magic happens in your mind. Studies show that exercising in green spaces, such as parks, trails, and beaches, reduces stress, improves focus, and elevates mood more than indoor workouts. This "green exercise effect" is so strong that even five minutes outdoors can spark measurable improvements in mental well-being. Whether you're swimming, hiking, paddleboarding, or simply walking your neighborhood loop, summer offers a natural boost to your fitness and happiness. So step outside, soak up the sunshine, and let the season do some of the work for you!
