They are more comprehensive than simple wills, addressing matters beyond property and assets, including guardianship issues, advance healthcare directives, and powers of attorney. Still, people have misconceptions about these plans and what benefits they bring. Here are some common myths you should stop believing. 1. I'm too young to worry about an estate plan. Anyone over the age of 18 should consider an estate plan. If you become incapacitated without one, your family members may not have access to your medical information or be able to make healthcare or financial decisions on your behalf. 2. My assets will automatically pass on to my heirs. If you don't specify your wishes in writing, the intestacy rules in your state will determine who manages your financial matters and who receives your assets upon your passing. Those appointments may not align with your wishes. 3. Estate plans are about assets and properties. A well-drafted estate plan will also include your wishes regarding guardianship of your minor dependents, your advance healthcare directives, and financial and medical powers of attorney. 4. My family already knows my wishes. If your wishes are not in writing, the law in your state prevails regarding both your medical care and how your assets are divided. An estate plan guarantees that your wishes—not state laws or the wishes of individual family members—are honored. 5. Once I draw up an estate plan, I'm all set. Estate plans, like wills, are not one and done. Review your plan periodically and especially after major life events like marriage, divorce, birth of a child or grandchild, retirement. Make sure it still aligns with your wishes and that your beneficiaries are up to date. A financial planner and experienced estate planning attorney can help clear up these and any other misunderstandings, and ensure you have a plan that brings you peace of mind and protects your heirs from undue stress and tax liabilities. – Anthony Kearns Combined, Anthony P. Family Promise of Hunterdon County (FPHC) is excited to invite the community to its upcoming Summer Comedy & Dinner Night, taking place on Friday, July 24, at the Clinton Fire House. This special evening will bring together neighbors, local businesses, and supporters for a night of laughter, great food, and community spirit… all while helping local families facing housing instability and homelessness. Guests will enjoy a delicious dinner featuring contributions from local restaurants, followed by live comedy entertainment designed to provide a fun and memorable summer night out. In addition, several area businesses have stepped forward to support the event through sponsorships and donations, demonstrating the generosity and compassion that make Hunterdon County such a special place to live. The event serves as an important fundraiser for Family Promise of Hunterdon County, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing and ending homelessness for families and individuals right here in our community. Through programs that provide financial assistance, case management, and supportive services, FPHC helps individuals and families regain stability and build a path toward long-term self-sufficiency. The need for these services continues to grow as many local families struggle with rising housing costs and unexpected financial challenges. Funds raised through Summer Comedy & Dinner Night will directly support programs that keep families safely housed and help parents and children avoid the trauma of homelessness. Whether you're looking for a fun evening with friends or an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in your community, this event offers both.
