(IGP) is pleased to announce that the Alexea G. Karpinski Memorial Scholarship application is now available for all graduating high school senior athletes who are current residents of New Jersey and enrolling full-time in an accredited undergraduate program/school, technical/ vocational training, or the military upon graduation in 2026. Submissions must be received by April 1, 2026. The scholarship award amount is $2,253, and the number of scholarships to be awarded will vary based on the number of eligible applicants and funds available. Since 2022, Iron Girl Project has awarded thirty Alexea G. Karpinski Memorial Scholarships totaling $67,590 to New Jersey high school student- athletes. The amount of the scholarship was chosen to reflect the jersey numbers Alexea wore at Hunterdon Central Regional High School: #22 for lacrosse and #53 for field hockey. Alexea's parents and IGP founders, Danielle and Mike Karpinski, shared, "Last year our scholarship committee was humbled to read 165 essays detailing burdens faced and overcome in these students' young lives." They added, "The recipients were chosen not for the size or seriousness of their burden, but for how they responded, transforming their burden into a blessing and inspiring those around them." Iron Girl Project, Inc. hosts three key fundraising events each year for the scholarship fund. This year, IGP will host their 6th Annual 5K Run/1M Walk, newly named Grit and Glaze 5K, 1M & Donut Dash Run/Walk to be held at Duke Island Park in Bridgewateron May 31, followed by the Links For Lex 5th Annual Golf Outing in the fall and the virtual Flex For Lex Workout Circuit Challenge in November. Scholarship eligibility requirements and applications, in addition to IGP's Race Registration and sponsorship opportunities, can be found by visiting: www.IronGirlProject.org or by emailing: IronGirlProject@gmail.com for more information. Iron Girl Project, Inc. was specifically created to honor the memory of Alexea "Lex" Karpinski, an aspiring two-sport D1 athlete, and Honor Roll student in her junior year at Hunterdon Central Regional High School, who passed away suddenly in November of 2020. It supports high school student athletes on their journey to create their own legacy, one that has a positive impact on their teammates, families, and communities. Combined, Anthony P. Juggling these responsibilities is challenging. Sometimes it's impossible to be present for both. The New Jersey Family Leave Act (NJFLA) aims to help that. NJFLA was originally adopted in 1989 to provide unpaid job protection for workers who needed to take a leave to care for family members, provided certain qualifying events were met. The Act has since been amended, first in 2019 to expand the definition of "family" and, more recently, to expand its protections. Before leaving office this year, former Gov. Phil Murphy signed amendments to the NJFLA broadening the overall scope of who is covered and making it easier for employees to manage their leave options. The amendments take effect this July 17th and include the following changes: • Employees are eligible once they have been employed for at least three months (decreased from 12 months), and have worked 250 hours (decreased from 1,000 hours) within the last 12 months • Employers of at least 15 employees (decreased from 30 employees) must now offer family leave; this number will further decrease to 10 employees in July of 2027 and 5 employees in July of 2028 The length of leave – 12 weeks within a 24-month period – remains the same. The NJFLA is an unpaid protection that ensures an employee is offered their same job or an equivalent position once they return to work. New Jersey Temporary Disability Insurance and New Jersey Family Leave Insurance both provide paid benefits while the employee is on leave. The latest amendments to the NJFLA also allow employees to choose the sequence in which to take their earned time off, temporary disability, or family leave. However, several types of leave cannot be taken simultaneously during any one period. Caring for loved ones while meeting job demands can be difficult, but there is help available. – Anthony Kearns Combined, Anthony P. Kearns and Victor A.
