C O M W o m e n ' s f o r U m : s H a r i n g W i s d o m Dear Ladies, Remember when you were growing up that at the park or the post office, maybe the library or even your school, in some prominent setting there would be a statue commemorating an historic event or person? Most of these artworks became a part of the "scenery", a place to meet – some providing a seating area to gather with friends. And, while their purpose was to honor history and beautify our environment, they mostly went unnoticed and uncelebrated. Lately, it's been the tearing down and destruction of some of those memorials, for a number of reasons (important statements to some, causes of anguish to others) that has brought attention to their existence. And even more glossed over are the names and stories of brilliant artists whose great works elevate our government buildings, towns and cities from the banal to the more culturally and historically appointed. One of the highlights of the Women's Forum program has been our focus on great artists throughout history, their life stories and their work. Starting with the painters, we have attended museums and special exhibits dedicated to these creators and have marveled at their talent and the wonder of their creations. Now, our journey of discovery leads us to the sculptors, those brilliant artists who brought forth miracles from a hunk of marble or granite, bronze, copper, woods, clays, plasters, gold and silver and more! First off, at our October luncheon, we'll study the French sculptor Auguste Rodin, with a documentary about his life, his passions and his work. We'll learn how the complexities of this extraordinarily talented man inspired some of his most dramatic sculptures. RODIN LUNCHEON: Thursday, October 9 at noon. Dillon Library, Bedminster NJ. Admission is $20. Register here: http://engagedpatrons.org/EventsExtended. cfm?SiteID=3205&EventID=569264. We are fortunate to have a museum dedicated to Rodin within striking distance of our Bedminster, NJ location! The Rodin Museum – a branch of the Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA), where one admission ticket is valid for both museums is a beautiful "boutique" of a museum located close to the PMA. However, it is not large enough for a whole day's visit and does not offer a dining facility. Since we can never really count on the weather, we can't really count on a 13-minute walk there from the main museum to be a good idea. Our bus will first take us to the main museum (PMA) where you can visit the current exhibits, have lunch, browse the lovely gift shop and then, at 1:00 pm, our bus will take us over to the Rodin Museum, just a few minutes away. At the end of the day, at 3:00 pm, we'll be picked up there at the Rodin Museum for the return trip home. TRIP TO THE PHILADELPHIA MUSEUM OF ART/RODIN MUSEUM: Monday,* October 20. Bus leaves Dillon Library, Bedminster NJ at 9:00 am. Return pick-up is at 3:00 pm at THE RODIN MUSEUM. Admission is $45, and does not include entry to the museums. *The Rodin Museum is closed on our customary Thursday event day. Register here: http://engagedpatrons.org/EventsExtended. cfm?SiteID=3205&EventID=569266. Upcoming dates for WF programs: November 6 & 20, December 4 & 18. Wishing you a cool and soft start to Autumn!
