Tumor Tidbits by Deborah Rizzo, MA, MT-BC, PPMT Tumor Tidbit #5: Have you ever gone to an internet doctor site and tried to diagnose yourself? When I asked my friends and family, they all laughed and joked that the diagnosis was always a brain tumor. Have a paper cut? Brain tumor. Big toe aches when it rains? Brain tumor. The list, in jest, goes on and on. But when should you be concerned that it's actually a brain tumor? When does it cease being fun and games and turn into a medical event? The Mayo Clinic lists headaches, nausea or vomiting, blurry vision or seeing double, trouble with balance, speech problems, feeling very tired, vertigo, and personality or behavior changes as symptoms of a brain tumor. These symptoms are not exclusive to brain tumors and this list should not be regarded as medical advice. If you are experiencing some of these symptoms and are concerned, please seek professional medical advice from a doctor or specialist. If you feel the matter is urgent, call 9-1-1. Source: Brain tumor - Symptoms and causes - Mayo Clinic Tumor Tidbit #6 It seems everybody has a registry these days. There are registries for babies, for weddings, for birthdays and celebrations, and even for pets. Did you know there's even a registry for brain tumors? The Central Brain Tumor Registry of the United States (CBTRUS) was founded in 1992 after a two year study from the American Brain Tumor Association found that only malignant cases were being recognized using standard data reporting. The mission of CBTRUS is, "We are committed to being a resource for gathering and disseminating epidemiologic data on all primary benign and malignant brain and other CNS tumors. These data support the accurate description of incidence and survival patterns, as well as diagnosis and treatment, facilitate etiologic studies, establish awareness of the disease, and ultimately help prevent central nervous system tumors." (https://cbtrus.org/) By including the non-malignant, or benign, tumor, more empirical evidence was found to further investigate tumors by geographic location, type, and size, in addition to the age and gender of the patient. The data was also useful in tracking which benign tumors became malignant over time. Giving blood is the most generous act of kindness that one human being can do for another. When you give blood, you save lives. Blood is used for accident victims, newborn babies and their mothers who need a transfusion, people undergoing surgery, patients receiving treatment for cancer and other diseases. You never know when you may need blood, or when someone you love may need it. Donating regularly can help ensure that our community is never short on blood. Can I donate blood? To be eligible to donate blood, a person must be at least 17 years of age, be in good health, weigh at least 110 pounds, have not donated in the past eight weeks, and is not currently taking antibiotics or insulin (only if of a "bovine" nature). Please note: Our 17-year-old donors must weigh at least 130 pounds. Call: 908.788.6405 to schedule an appointment.
