Unfortunately, the signs of drowning aren't the flailing and splashing depicted in movies and cartoons; often they are subtle and silent. What to look for: • A person with their head low in the water • A blank look, or empty, glassy eyes • A vertical or upright position and no movement of their legs • Someone looking as though they're climbing a non-existent ladder • Hyperventilating or gasping for air • Someone attempting to swim in a particular direction without making progress The best tools for preventing drowning are education, supervision, and the use of safety equipment. Without scaring them, talk to your children about potential dangers they face in the water. Give them swimming lessons from an early age, if possible. This helps to build confidence and prepare them to react in emergency situations. Here's a water safety checklist to help you enjoy one of summer's most popular activities: At home: • Install a safety fence with self-locking gate around your pool. • Discourage horseplay, i.e., running near edges or decks of the pool, playing breath-holding games, pushing or shoving others, reaching for items that fall into the water. At the lake or beach: • Listen to lifeguards and swim only in designated areas. • Learn the meaning behind the different colored beach warning flags. • Heed weather reports and water current warnings. On any watercraft: • Always wear a life jacket. • Operate all vehicles at safe speeds. • Observe nautical rules and regulations. Whenever you're near water, make sure children are always adequately supervised by a responsible adult. And if someone should fall in, remind them to float. Struggling to swim or tread water can tire them out before help can arrive. If you do witness someone in trouble, call for help; attempt rescue only if you can do so safely. Alert 9-1-1.
