Certified Personal Trainer & Senior Trainer & Aquatics Trainer, Certified Lifestyle Health Coach As the weather gets warmer, we may be interested in changing up our exercise routine and getting outside. Maybe change the equipment we use, the sports we play. Perhaps you are new to exercise and interested in exploring options. Here are some surprisingly simple and practical tips to try which can help with creating habits that last. Let's talk about the benefits of just walking. Instead of attempting 10,000 steps a day, walking for at least eleven minutes can lower your risk of premature death by almost 25%. Walking these same eleven minutes also dropped the risk of heart disease and some cancers. When starting an exercise habit, there are lots of variables to consider – the type, duration, etc. If you're looking to burn fat with each workout and lower your body's fat stores, there may be a big advantage in exercising before noon. Research in mice found that animals that exercised within a few hours of waking up burned more fat than later in the day. Taking your workout outside can improve the benefits of exercise. Physical activity done in nature-called "Green Exercise" has been shown to improve working memory and concentration substantially more than an indoor walk. The additional effects besides concentration shows increased motivation and making exercise feel less daunting. Keep in mind that it's never too late to boost your brain health. Walking has been shown to improve cognitive function. Even exercising for as little as four days a week can make brain connections stronger and improve thinking. The goal of 10,000 steps a day may not be realistic or practical for some people, especially beginners. It also may not be based on real evidence. A study of more than 47,000 found that for both men and women under 60 the greatest benefit came with step counts between 8,000 and 10,000 steps a day. For those older than 60, the count was slightly lower. That came out to between 6,000 and 8,000 steps. When you talk about your fat burning zone, most of us don't realize it involves exercising far more gently than you would expect. The lighter the workout, the more your body uses fat to fuel it, making easy exercise the key to your fat burning zone. Tracking your exercise serves at least two specific purposes. First, it allows you to follow your progress but more importantly, it forces you to think of yourself as active. In a study of walkers, the people who kept track of their steps reported better moods and higher self esteem, and they also began eating healthier – less high fat foods and more produce. A very good reason to track your exercise – it allows you to celebrate how active you have discovered yourself to be. Tumor Tidbits by Deborah Rizzo, MA, MT-BC, PPMT Tumor Tidbit #4 It's an unfortunate fact that most people are familiar, at least vaguely, with stages of cancer. Did you know that there are different stages of brain tumors too? They follow the same gradation, stages 1-4, with lower stages being less threatening than those with a higher grade. Brain tumors can also change stages and morph. Let's take a look at a diagnosis of astrocytoma. An astrocytoma is a tumor in the central nervous system, meaning brain and/or spinal cord, that affects the cells that hold the structure together. A benign, or noncancerous, astrocytoma is often diagnosed as stage 1. Stages 2, 3, and 4 are reserved for malignant, meaning cancerous, tumors that invade and destroy healthy tissue. At stage 4, an astrocytoma is reclassified as a glioblastoma or GBM. Glioblastomas can be a diagnosis on their own after the discovery of an astrocytoma. The Cleveland Clinic wrote an informative article if you'd like more information specifically pertaining to astrocytomas: Astrocytoma: What It Is, Causes, Symptoms, Types & Treatments (clevelandclinic.org) For more information on how you can directly help those affected by brain tumors and brain cancer, please visit: www.InLoveAndSong. org and follow us on social media: @inloveandsongorg.
