From a relentless commitment to creating new concepts in art all through adulthood, the later years found him beset by serious illness and yet he continued, often from bed. What was his drive?? Was it a wanderlust into discovery which fueled his spirit with such intensity that even physical impairment could not stop it? (Remember Frida Kahlo, practically crippled and bedridden at so many stages of her life and pouring all her passions onto the canvas. And, Seraphine de Senlis, pulling from the depths of her mental illness to collect bits and pieces of earth and plants and candle wax from the local church, and blood from the butcher shop to create her own paints and then transfer them onto the canvas in her vibrant and mystifying paintings!) Some art historians credit Matisse's later years as being the time when he produced his best work. If that be the case, what does it say about his years of maturity and creativity? In his case was it a form of therapy? Or, in defiance of the ravages of age? A refuge? Or was it the life force that keeps the artist going - through illness, poverty, and even madness, akin to breathing? This June we will dedicate the month to study and honor Matisse. At our luncheon event we'll start with a comprehensive documentary that takes us from his artistic beginnings, through all the phases of his creative journey, to his last and most precious work, the serenely beautiful chapel in the town of Vence, France. MATISSE LUNCHEON Thursday, June 6 at noon. Dillon Library, Bedminster, NJ. Admission $20. To register, contact: womensforumusa@gmail.com. Continuing our month of Matisse, on Thursday June 27, we'll be heading to the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, home to an impressive collection of Matisses including the famous panels, The Dance!! And, to our good fortune, along with all the wonderful pieces hanging in the galleries, our visit coincides with a special exhibit of Matisse and Renoir!! TRIP TO THE BARNES FOUNDATION Thursday, June 27, leaving the Dillon Library, Bedminster NJ at 9am. Return trip at 3pm. Admission 45. Does not include entrance to the museum. FYI there is a cafe at the museum. To register, contact: womensforumusa@ gmail.com.
