Now that Spring is here and summer is around the corner, it is important to remember your sunscreen. You should apply it at home before going out as that makes things easier especially if you do not particularly like the greasy feel on your hands which you can then wash before leaving the house. It is recommended to carry it with you if you intend to spend a longer time outside, so that you can reapply it at regular intervals to ensure it is still working. During this time of the year, it is easier to make the mistake to think that because the temperatures outside are still mild, the sun will not affect us much. This is normally when we end up damaging the skin as caught unprepared, so even if it does not feel that warm it is a good habit to apply the sunscreen anyway. There are many sunscreen brands out on the market. The ones labeled as 'broad spectrum' filter both UVA and UVB lights. UVA rays are very hard to eliminate fully, in the US sunscreens containing avobenzone (photo stabilizing chemical) are the most effective ones for UVA protection. The effectiveness of the filter is displayed as Sun Protection Factor (SPF). The longer the exposure time or the stronger the sun (lunchtime will be more powerful than early mornings or late afternoons) the higher the value of the SPF factor is recommended (30 or above). It is best to reapply it every 2-4 hours, making sure that we use a good layer over the surface of exposed skin. Fully waterproof sunscreens do not exist, so if you are taking your kayak or paddleboard out on the lake you should take the time to reapply the sunscreen often or wear a much higher SPF factor, especially considering the amplified effect of the water reflecting the light on your skin. Carrying a hat, sunglasses, protective clothing and avoiding going out in the middle of the day are also good ways to protect yourself and your skin. Enjoy the outdoors and look after your skin!
