Parkinson's is a progressive degenerative chronic disease featuring a combination of motor and non-motor symptoms. The average age of onset is 60 and it is more prevalent in men. 1.5 million people in the US are affected, with the environment and genetics playing some role in the development of the disease. The treatments consist of medications, deep brain stimulation, focused ultrasound and exercise, including boxing which some studies suggest may be neuro-protective possibly delaying the progression of Parkinson's. The Rock Steady Boxing program is Parkinson's-specific and is an exercise modality which enables people with Parkinson's to "fight" their disease. It has been shown to improve quality of life and sense of efficacy and self worth. The program includes boxing, balance training, strength training, fine motor exercises, brain training, flexibility and fun! Another significant benefit of the program is the socialization aspect. Being together with others who share similar symptoms and experiences is invaluable. Classes are held at the Clinton Wellness Center 3 times a week.
