While this is a huge step in the right direction, many people going through treatments are left with long term side effects. Exercise can help minimize some of these side effects, correct muscle imbalances, decrease the risk of future cancers and help people return to their previous level of fitness or a better level of fitness. Chemotherapy and radiation can be detrimental to the heart and lungs. Cardiorespiratory conditioning can help to strengthen both. Exercise may reduce the risk of developing certain cancers, can help with pain management, fatigue, appetite loss and lymphedema prevention and management. Exercise can be something as simple as walking. Breathing exercises and stretching are an important part of the plan. Exercise produces endorphins, helps you gain and maintain strength, helps to maintain proper body weight by burning calories and helps with appetite. Cancer research estimates that 60-70% of all cancers are directly linked to our dietary and lifestyle habits. Simple life changes such as adding some activity and small nutritional changes can help us all live better lives. Exercise can have a positive effect on the quality of life we live, both physically and mentally. After a cancer diagnosis, some exercise before treatment and/or surgery can help to strengthen the body, to help support you during the cancer journey and beyond. During treatment exercise may help to reduce fatigue and minimize side effects. Post-treatment exercise can strengthen weak muscles, correct muscle and postural imbalances and reduce and manage lymphedema.
